About the New Buffalo Project

This is the dig blog for the summer 2010 field season at the New Buffalo Commune, Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico.  We are a team of archaeologists and anthropologists from Columbia University, Barnard College, and a few other places, working under the supervision of Sev Fowles, a professor at Barnard, and Kaet Heupel, a doctoral candidate at Columbia. Our first excavation site is a pit house dating to the late 1960s.  We hope to learn something about the material culture of hippie communes and the dynamics of Indian play in American counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s.
